GIS - Geographical Information System

GIS Analyst

Before building roads, corporate parks and housing developments, Geographic Information System (GIS) analysts are on the job. These surveyors use software to create, display and analyze very detailed maps. The maps highlight everything from the contour of the land to the location of every street sign and fire hydrant.

GIS analysts use these layered maps to help people make decisions and solve problems. For example, the maps provided by a GIS analyst help city planners determine the best location for a new road.

These surveyors also aid in the clean up of hazardous wastes. By analyzing everything from water sources to roads to the slope of the land, a GIS analyst can show the extent of the pollution and who is responsible for cleanup.
