Geodetic Surveyors

Geodesists map the shape and size of the earth.  They use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to pinpoint the exact location - within centimeters of an object on the earth's surface.

How?  They use GPS receivers on the ground to access the signals from a minimum of 4 GPS satellites.  The satellites share their exact time and coordinates which allows the receiver to compute its location anywhere on or above the surface of the earth.  The geodesist uses these measurements to facilitate the determination of highly accurate three dimensional coordinates which support the construction of high quality mapping and charting products.
